Why the choice of color palette base matters.
Choosing the right base is a crucial first step in the ColorWorks™ process. To help you familiarize yourself with the full range of options, we recommend obtaining a Base Deck, which provides a hands-on look at each substrate’s texture, weight, and print characteristics.
Each substrate absorbs ink differently, which can greatly affect the depth, vibrancy, and overall appearance of your colors once printed. We strongly recommend printing a ColorWorks™ Color Palette on your chosen base. This allows you to accurately select your colors and confirm the look of your design before committing to full production.
When selecting custom colors, it is essential to print a color palette on your chosen base. This ensures you see exactly how each color will reproduce on that specific substrate, allowing for a more accurate and confident selection.
Using HEX# 47788A from our ColorWorks™ Color Palette as an example, you can see the color difference across the different substrates emphasizing the importance of this selection.
ColorWorks™ FAQ
GENERAL INFORMATION
How does ColorWorks™ differ from other print-to-order services?
Unlike many “automated” print-to-order services that simply place your submitted design in a preset template or layout, RM COCO has human-driven design support. The Design Studio can help with pattern adjustments, scaling/repeat setup, recoloring, or artwork preparation — allowing for more refined and tailored results.
Is there a minimum yardage requirement for ColorWorks™ patterns, recolored prints or custom design?
Yes, there is a 1 yard minimum.
Is there a flat ‘print only’ price added to the base fabric price that determines the final ‘per yard’ cost?
No, each base fabric has its own unique price per yard. This is determined by several factors – from working loss to print setup time required. The final cost per yard is determined by this, so there is not a print cost + base fabric cost = cost per yard formula.
How long does it take to print with ColorWorks™?
The approximate lead time from order approval is between 4-6 business days. This can vary depending on the volume going through the print room.
If water is spilled on a print, will the colors run?
No, the inks used for ColorWorks™ prints are extremely colorfast.
Are the ColorWorks™ base fabrics available unprinted?
Yes, all of the base fabrics are available unprinted. Several of the base fabrics are available in multiple colors in addition to the color(s) offered as a print base. The base options available in multiple colors are:

SAMPLING INFORMATION
Are memos available on all patterns and colors in the ColorWorks™ collection?
Memos are available on the chosen base fabric for all ColorWorks™ patterns except for the patterns within the Digital Library. If you would like a sample on a different base than the chosen, you must purchase the required minimum of 1 yard.
Is the silk base offered as a free memo?
Yes, but only the patterns Manchurian, Manchurian Blossoms and Manchurian Fret.
What if I like the color shown, but want to see a sample on one of the other base fabrics?
You may purchase a 1 yard sample of any ColorWorks™ pattern and color on any of the base fabrics for the cost of 1 yard of the selected base.
Which base fabric is the ColorWorks™ color palette printed on?
You may select any of the base fabrics that we offer in the program. It is recommended that you select the base fabric that you think you would use the most.
What are HEX numbers on the ColorWorks™ Palette?
A HEX number is a combination of six letters and numbers that represents a formula needed to reproduce that specific color.
Is there a charge for the color palette?
Yes, the cost of the color palette is the wholesale price for 1 printed yard of the selected base.
Has there been any changes to the base fabric selections since the introduction of ColorWorks™?
No, the same base fabrics are still being used. When we update the base fabric deck with new offerings we will change the color of the printed pattern to help identify the newest version. There will also be communication from our marketing department on the new additions when that time comes.
PRINTING INFORMATION
The patterns in the first collection seem to have more ink on them than the second. Is less ink being used?
No. The ColorWorks™ color palette was expanded after the first collection was produced. There is a wider variety of tones and hue saturations from which to choose now. The second set of patterns offers some of the softer tones and that may be the difference you are noticing, but the same amount of ink has remained consistent.
If a customer needs to cancel an order after it is printed, is that an option with a restocking fee?
No. Each order, even the standard ColorWorks™ patterns are custom printed to order and are not stocked. The only returns allowed after printing are for flawed or damaged goods.
What would cause a ‘hazy’ look to a print design?
Digital printing is different from screen printing. There is an inherent softness to digital printing as the ink is being applied through a jet of air, whereas screen printing pushes ink through a type of stencil that has a hard edge. Base fabrics can also have an optical effect on how your eye sees a finished fabric. The more textured the ground fabric, the less sharp a design may appear. Finer lines and motifs will also be affected the more textured the base fabric, and conversely, these elements will appear sharper the finer the weave of the base fabric.

If a customer certifies that they own a copyright that they do not have the rights to, the customer may have a lawsuit filed against them for copyright infringement. All legal and financial penalties for this will be the sole responsibility of the party that certified ownership of a copyright that they do not own.
CUSTOMIZE INFORMATION
What colors can I use for recoloring?
You can purchase a ColorWorks™ color palette which features 2600+ custom colors to select from. Each color on the palette has its own unique HEX color formula that you enter on the recolor form or on the recolor tool on the website.
What if I would like a colorway that is not shown in one of the ColorWorks™ patterns?
With the exclusion of only a few patterns, all ColorWorks™ are eligible to be recolored to some degree. Some of the more complex patterns only allow the background to be changed. This is due to a high number colors used to create depth within the pattern. These can also be recolored but only with the assistance of the ColorWorks™ artist.
Are the ‘specs’ in the background of Alsace Damask a flaw? Can those be removed?
No, they are not a flaw. The specs are part of the design to provide it depth. Yes, you can remove them by utilizing the recolor tool and adjusting that color layer to match another layer in the design or change to white to be unprinted. The same concept goes for the pattern Guinevere and the texture in the background.
Is there a charge for the recoloring?
Yes and no. If you take advantage of the customize tool via the website, there is no additional fee. However, if you require the assistance of the ColorWorks™ artist, there will be a fee of $80 per hour with a minimum of $20.
If I need help putting my pattern into repeat or coloring the design, can RM COCO help with that?
Yes, we can assist with both. If you require the assistance of the ColorWorks™ artist, there will be a fee of $80 per hour. The artist will evaluate each job and send a quote for approval that must be signed an returned before any design work can begin.
Is there a way to see the recolored pattern printed prior to purchasing yardage?
Yes, it is highly recommended that you purchase a 1 yard strike off to confirm color before proceeding with your yardage order.
Is a 1 yard strike off mandatory to purchase?
No, however it is highly recommended that you purchase a 1 yard strike off to confirm color and scale on the selected base before proceeding with your yardage order.
What if I do not like the approval sample? Is it returnable?
No, each trial is custom printed and cannot be returned.
What if I want to make adjustments to my approval sample?
You can make any changes necessary to your design ahead of your production order being printed. Simply update your design and/or base selection online or submit the changes to colorworks@rmcoco.com. It is recommended to get another strike off to confirm accuracy before printing the full order.
How would a customer reorder a customized pattern or their own design?
Each pattern and colorway created for a customer will have a unique pattern number printed on the invoice for that item. RM COCO will use that number to link an order to the digital file for the design previously ordered.
